What We Do in the Feed Program

  • All animal feed and pet food and associated ingredient manufacturers located in Kentucky must comply with good manufacturing practices that are assessed as part of the Division’s comprehensive inspection program. The purpose of these inspections is to ensure proper manufacturing conditions to support safety of your animal’s feed. The Division also collaborates with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct federally contracted inspections. Our inspectors average over 19 years of experience.

  • Official feed samples are collected by the Division using specific sampling protocols. These samples are then analyzed by our in-house laboratory for a variety of nutrients and contaminants. This data is used to evaluate safety, quality, and suitability of a product’s labeling. All dog and cat foods labeled as complete and balanced are tested against the corresponding AAFCO Nutrient Profile to ensure that your pet is getting proper nutrition. The combined results of these analyses are published in our yearly Feed Bulletin .

  • Firms selling commercial animal feeds, including pet foods, in Kentucky are required to register all products with the Division before distribution. The Kentucky Commercial Feed Law and Regulations specifies what information must appear on a label. A feed label is the fundamental communication with the consumer; it provides the purpose of the food, feeding directions, nutrient information, ingredient content and special instructions or warnings. Consistent labeling helps the purchaser to compare between products and choose the best foods for their animals. Misleading and unsubstantiated information or claims are prohibited.
