Livestock Feed Labeling

As part of the registration process, firms distributing commercial animal feeds are required to submit their labels for review and acceptance by the Division. Labels are reviewed for adherence to the Kentucky Commercial Feed Law , but also to the specific labeling requirements of the Commercial Feed Administrative Regulations for Livestock Feeds .

The Division has pamphlets and example labels available to help firms understand required label elements for many types of commercial feeds. Note that if your firm’s product is intended to be fed to more than one species, it must meet the labeling requirements for all listed species.
Commercial animal feeds containing FDA approved medications must meet the labeling and formulation requirements for those drugs as prescribed in the Code of Federal Regulations and should follow Blue Bird Labeling as well as meet the requirements set forth in Kentucky Commercial Feed Law and Regulations. To assist our producers, the Division has example labels for many commonly used medicated feed that meet both the federal and Division requirements. These examples include commonly used VFD label examples.
Firms wishing to label commercial feeds to meet labeling requirements for multiple states should consider meeting the labeling elements specified in the Model Regulations of the AAFCO Official Publication . Many state laws and regulations, including Kentucky’s, are based off of these Model Regulations. Note that AAFCO has a free Animal Feed Labeling Guide available on their website..
