What We Do for Pets

  • All pet food and pet food ingredient manufacturers located in Kentucky must comply with good manufacturing practices that are assessed as part of the Division's comprehensive inspection program. The purpose of these inspections is to ensure proper manufacturing conditions to support safety of your pet's food. The Division also collaborates with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct federally contracted inspections. Our inspectors average over 19 years of experience.

  • Official samples are collected by the Division using specific sampling protocols. These samples are then analyzed by our in-house laboratory for a variety of nutrients and contaminants. These data are used to evaluate safety, quality, and suitability of a product's labeling. All dog and cat foods labeled as complete and balanced are tested against the corresponding AAFCO Nutrient Profile to ensure that your pet is getting proper nutrition.

  • Firms selling pet foods and treats in Kentucky are required to register all products before distribution to ensure that correct label information is provided to the purchaser. The Kentucky Commercial Feed Law and Regulations specifies what information must appear on a label. A feed label is the fundamental communication with the consumer; it provides the purpose of the food, feeding directions, nutrient information, calorie content, ingredient content and special instructions or warnings. Consistent labeling helps the pet parent to compare between products and choose the best food for their particular pet. Misleading and unsubstantiated information or claims are prohibited.
