What We Do for Livestock
-
All livestock feed and ingredient manufacturers located in Kentucky must comply with good manufacturing practices that are assessed as part of the Division's comprehensive inspection program. The purpose of these inspections is to ensure proper manufacturing conditions to support animal feed safety. The Division also collaborates with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct federally contracted inspections. Our inspectors average over 19 years of experience.

Official samples are collected by the Division using specific sampling protocols. These samples are then analyzed by our in-house laboratory for a variety of nutrients and contaminants. This data is used to evaluate safety, quality, and suitability of a product’s labeling. The combined results of these analyses are published in our yearly Feed Bulletin .

Firms selling commercial livestock feeds in Kentucky are required to register all products before distribution to ensure that correct label information is provided to the purchaser. The Kentucky Commercial Feed Law and Regulations specifies what information must appear on a label. A feed label is the fundamental communication with the consumer; it provides the purpose of the feed, feeding directions, nutrient information, ingredient content and special instructions or warnings including statements required for medicated feeds. Consistent and accurate labeling helps farmers to choose the best feed for their livestock. Misleading and unsubstantiated information or claims are prohibited.
