How to submit samples

Sampling Procedures | Information Needed | Amount to Submit | Packaging Samples | Endophyte Samples

The analysis you receive from our laboratory is indicative of the sample submitted. Therefore, to evaluate the true quality of a seed lot, certain considerations must be made in advance to ensure a representative sample is submitted.

Sampling Procedures:

When sampling seed (regardless of the container size), use an appropriate probe when possible. Hand sampling is acceptable if the result is representative of the lot. Sub-samples of bulk seed should be taken in equal portions at several evenly distributed locations in the container. For bagged seed, a minimum of 5 bags plus 10% of the bags in the lot (not to exceed 30 bags) should be sampled. Once the sample is obtained it can be mixed and divided down to desired testing weight. For more information on sampling techniques and obtaining or using probes, please contact the lab.

Information Needed:

The information we need to properly identify your sample and complete our records includes:

  • Your name (business or personal) and complete mailing address,
  • Variety, Kind and/or Lot number for the seed sample,
  • Certified, Registered or Foundation status, if applicable,
  • Seed treatment, if applicable,
  • Year Grown (important -- sample may need pre-chilling prior to germ test),
  • Tests requested (Complete, Purity, Germination, etc...).

A simple Seed Test Submittal Form is available on-line or by calling our lab. Please use one form per sample.

Amount to Submit:

Seed Size
Quantity
Cereals
2 lbs.
Corn and Soybeans
2 lbs.
Small-seed Legumes and Chaffy Grasses
1/2 lb.
Sorghum
1 lb.
Germination Only Samples
800 seeds (minimum)

Packaging Samples:

When sending samples via mail, UPS or other service, please take time to make sure the sample is properly packed. Bags of seed should be packed tightly in a box using packing material like newspaper or styrofoam peanuts to prevent shifting during shipping. Bags that move around can rip open in the box, meaning the samples could get mixed and would have to be re-submitted for testing.

Seed can be mailed in our pre-printed bags. Once sealed, these can be sent individually through the postal service. These bags for submitting samples are available from our lab.
