When does a germination test expire?

A germination testis valid for 15 months for cool-season grasses and 9 months for all other seed.  However, agricultural or vegetable seed packaged in hermetically sealed containers may be distributed for a period of thirty-six months.

What are the minimum quality standards for agricultural seed in Kentucky?

Seed with any of the following conditions may not be sold.

  • Germination that is less than 60%.
  • The presence of more than 2% weed seed.
  • The presence of noxious weed seeds greater than the number indicated on this chart.
  • The presence of any combination of noxious weed seeds whose sum is greater than 480 seeds per pound.

What information is required on the label?

  Agricultural Seed

  • Seedsman name and address
  • Seed Kind and Variety
  • Lot Number
  • Origin
  • Germination %
  • Test Date (month and year)
  • Purity includes % of pure seed, inert matter, crop, and weed seeds, for each component over 5%
  • Noxious Weeds per pound
  • Treatment Statement (if applicable)

  Vegetable Seed

  • Seedsman name and address
  • Seed Kind and Variety
  • Lot Number
  • Germination and Test Date (month and year) OR The year for which the seed was packed for distribution as "Packed for ------"

If the germination is less than the standard listed here the following items must also be included on the label

  • Percentage of germination
  • The words "Below Standard" in not less than eight (8) point font size.

If you have a pre-planted container and it is difficult to determine the quantity of seed without removing the seed from the medium a statement to indicate the minimum number of seed in the container must be included.

  • Seedsman name and address
  • Seed Kind and Variety
  • Lot Number
  • Germination and Test Date (month and year)

If the germination is less than the standard listed here the following items must also be included on the label

  • Percentage of germination
